The One For Active Lifestyles: EltaMD UV Sport

When it comes to living an active lifestyle or hanging by the pool, EltaMD UV Sport SPF 50 is the ideal summer sunscreen for face and body. UV Sport’s formula is reminiscent of traditional sunscreen: thick, heavy, ain’t goin’ nowhere for 80-minutes kind of coverage. Keep in mind, this smells like sunscreen and feels like sunscreen, but without the chalky residue.  A thorough double cleanse is needed after wearing.

The formula includes Vitamin E providing additional antioxidant protection to fend off free radicals. Fragrance-free, oil-free, paraben-free, sensitivity-free and noncomedogenic. Apply UV Sport to both wet and dry skin, it will stay put even when perspiring. A no-frills, high-performance sport sunscreen for summer days at the pool that will leave your skin burn-free.

The One That Smells Amazing: Hydropeptide Solar Defense

Hydropeptide Solar Defense SPF 30 is a wonderful sunscreen for no makeup days or to act as a killer primer on days you gussy up. When dispensed you’ll see a purple hue; these are little color spheres that match your skin tone without a chalky residue. Ladies with dark skin tones may need a few extra seconds to work it in, but otherwise, it’s a perfect match. Plus it smells amazing.

However, the application is specific or else you won’t like it. Apply a little between your fingers to break up the color spheres and press into your skin. The finish gives you a fresh, matte no-makeup glow that camouflages mild hyperpigmentation and redness. Non-greasy, flawless coverage with ingredients to hydrate, protect and help clarify your skin. A moisture-binding peptide reactivates epidermal lipids and allows for long-lasting hydration, plus it decreases oil leaving a no-shine appearance.

The One For No-Makeup Days: Skinceuticals Physical UV Defense

Physical Fusion UV Defense SPF 50 is easily one of the most popular sunscreens out there, right next to EltaMD’s line up. This particular formula is always highly rated by groups like the EWG. A weightless fluid with a universal tint for all skin types, although oily skin may find it to be a little much. It’s great for no-makeup days, as it’s lightweight and absorbs easily.

Formulated with transparent Zinc Oxide and translucent color spheres that adapt to most skin tones, however, it leaves a cast on deeper skin. In addition, be sure to shake your bottle before applying to mix pigment well. Paraben-free, non-comedogenic, water resistant, sheer, improves radiance and tinted. What’s not to love?

If you have sensitive skin and struggle to find a sunscreen that won’t irritate your skin, let alone your eyes, EltaMD UV Elements SPF 44 should be your next try. UV Elements is specifically designed for delicate post-procedure skin, which makes it amazing for those of us who are sensitive and reactive to everything. Think post-laser treatment or a chemical peel,

There’s little to no scent, a nice tint to match most skin tones, and it even has a bit of hyaluronic acid to plump and moisturize your skin. This formula feels wonderful on the skin, beautifully gliding on without irritating your skin on the days you’re feeling extra sensitive.

Active Ingredients: Zinc Oxide 10.0%, Titanium Dioxide 5.5%.

The One You Didn’t Know You Needed: Krave Beauty The Beet Shield

Image: @kravebeauty via Instagram

Krave Beauty’s The Beet Shield is advertised as an antioxidant day fluid, due to the fact it uses a variety of new generation sunscreen ingredients not yet approved in the USA. However, in Korea, The Beet Shield is tested and approved SPF 50+ PA++++. If you’re unfamiliar with international SPF standards, this basically means it’s a killer face sunscreen you need to try.

We really love The Beet Shield on its own, under makeup, or for easily reapplying our SPF on no-makeup days. Keep in mind, this formula is loaded with emollients like botanical oils, so oily skin may want to skip this one. On the other hand, if you lean toward the dry or dehydrated side of the spectrum, you will fall in love with this product. Plus it’s easily the most affordable SPF in our summer guide!

  1. Love LaRoche Posay! I will need to collect the others that you mentioned. Thank you for this review. Thank you for not saying that we can eat our way to SPF because that makes me want to die in so many ways. I don’t know what’s up with this we need sun, we need vitamin D, and the claim that SPF gives cancer. Then, we all sit here and complain that we look 900 years old with wrinkles and sunspots. SUNSPOTS ALONE should be the obvious sign that sun DAMAGES your skin when you do NOT wear SPF. ok clearly, I get heated over this too because someone tell me one more time that you can eat carrots for natural SPF…then tell me that coconut oil will protect you from the sun when you’re outside all day long…. maybe like .5 seconds people. POINT FIVE SECONDS of sun protection from carrots. Yas. So much science and so much sense there. OK, thank you again for this.

    1. Eat 5 carrots, vigorously dance in circles while holding an ounce of rose quartz and yes, your skin is SPF protected! Some sunscreen ingredients can get into the bloodstream but you’re choosing the lesser of two evils: skin cancer vs. another. You can be as green and healthy as you want to be but your can’t protect yourself from everything, it’s just impossible… So live life and enjoy 😉
