Since BB cream’s were introduced in the States I was aware the newest trend had originated in Korea. I tried several, never enjoying them, and sticking to ol’ faithful Make Up For Ever HD. Ever since purchasing Shangpree’s Crystal BB Cream I haven’t touched my foundation. It’s my holy grail. Peach & Lily is the only place I can find it online. If they were to stop carrying it I would have to proposition a stranger in Korea to ship it to me! Or travel to Seoul just to stock up.
Here’s what you need to know about Shangpree….
“Seoul’s highly demanding spa-going elite have been flocking to the iconic Shangpree Spa for a first-class beauty experience for 25 years now. Every Shangpree esthetician must complete an incredibly lengthy and rigorous training process to ensure that they embody the spa’s high standards (even an esthetician with 20+ hands-on experience is required to train the Shangpree-way for 3 years before being able to provide client services)— and when Shangpree launched their product line, that same level of perfectionism was expected in every formula.”
After reading this I was intrigued, what skin care aficionado wouldn’t be???!
Product: Shangpree Crystal BB Cream
What it is: A whitening cream to even skin tone for a brightened, natural look
Claims: Botanical formula to encourage skin cell growth, reduce inflammation and prevent bacteria from breaking into the skin. Not only makes your skin look healthier but feel healthier, too.
Ingredients: Water, Cyclopentasiloxane, Titanium Dioxide, Dipropylene Glycol, Glycerin, Talc, Butylene Glycol Dicaprylate/dicaprate, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Peg-10 Dimethicone, Dimethicone, Arbutin, Hexyldecyl Myristoyl Methylaminopropionate, Isopropyl Isostearate, Zinc Oxide, Disteardimonium Hectorite, Magnesium Sulfate, Iron Oxides(ci77492), Dimethicone/vinyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Dipentaerythrityl Tri-polyhydroxystearate, Piper Methysticum Leaf/root/stem Extract, Portulaca Oleracea Extract, Vinyl Dimethicone/methicone Silsesquioxane Crosspolymer, Phenoxyethanol, Acrylates/dimethicone Copolymer, Calcium Aluminum Borosilicate, Iron Oxides(ci77499), Iron Oxides(ci77491), Methicone, Glycosyl Trehalose, Palmitic Acid, Methylparaben, Hydrogenated Starch Hydrolysate, Fragrance, Propylparaben, Tocopheryl Acetate, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Water, Sodium Hyaluronate, Angelica Keiskei Extract, Apium Graveolens (celery) Root/seed Extract, Beta Vulgaris (beet) Root Extract, Brassica Oleracea Acephala Leaf Extract, Brassica Oleracea Italica (broccoli) Extract, Symphytum Officinale Leaf Extract, Taraxacum Platycarpum Extract, Aluminum Hydroxide, Aluminum Stearate, Butylparaben, Adenosine, Madecassoside
Application: You could use a foundation brush but it wastes quite a bit of product. Applying small amounts to each quadrant of the face allowed me to use less and still get the coverage I wanted. I would say this provides light to medium coverage, allowing your skin to shine through.
FYI: A little bit goes a long way. A large pea-size is too much! Fair skin tones are going to work best. I have a pink undertone, but you can check out this review for another comparison. I finish with Nars Pressed Powder so the finished look is perfect, bright, and flawless. Want to see what it looks like? Check out the video below.
Where to buy: Peach & Lily $67
The ladies over at Peach & Lily connected me with their Shangpree rep in Seoul to answer questions for me. My skin was looking even better after taking it off [what Western makeup does that?!] and I wanted to know why. I mean my acne scars were fading drastically, my skin tone was brighter. Absolutely no congestion going on even with the silicones present in the formula. Cue my new found obsession with Shangpree.
Ingredients to know:
Portulaca Oleracea, a plant extract, reduces inflammation and prevents break outs.
Adenosine, the yeast-derived core ingredient for skin cell growth, plays an important cell-signaling role in our bodies. It’s also a great anti-inflammatory. Although it’s at the bottom of the ingredient list I feel it’s worth noting since this is one of the product claims.
Several sunscreen actives are also in the formula but Shangpree’s Crystal BB Cream is not advertised as a BB Cream + SPF combo. According to Shangpree’s skin experts including SPF in a BB Cream doesn’t have enough effect to offer real protection. It’s essentially a marketing concept used by many brands. So, layer it over your current standby SPF for a little extra protection but don’t rely on it as your sole sunscreen.
Fun Fact: at Shangpree Spa the Crystal BB Cream is actually used as a final product in facial treatments! According to Shangpree the difference between your average BB cream and a “real” BB cream, like this one, is that it’s helping to regenerate skin cells, calm, and soothe your skin.
If you have a light skin tone, buy it. Like, now. Then come back and share with me how much you love it!!
